STOCKHOLM, MY LOVE

7.5 out of 10

UK/Sweden co-production

Release date: 16th June 2017

Director: Mark Cousins (I Am Belfast (doc))

Cast: Neneh Cherry

Writer: Anita Oxburgh, Neneh Cherry & Mark Cousins

Trailer: STOCKHOLM, MY LOVE

stockholm-my-love-2016-poster

Now for something completely different. Former film critic Mark Cousins steps behind the camera for his first fictional feature film and it’s a introspective, interest work of deceptive simplicity.  I felt like I was watching a less-elusive version of a recent Terence Malick film – you know, the ones with no script, lots of whispering, and pretty actresses doing cartwheels in meadows whilst stubbly male leads stalk neon drenched strip clubs. However, Mark Cousins has packed a script, a narrative and an interesting story, as slight as it is, into this cinema mini-break to Stockholm with a twist.

Singer and former 80s pop-star, rapper Neneh Cherry plays an architect, called Alva, who is due to do a talk on the architecture of her city, the Swedish capital Stockholm, but whilst preparing, she begins to wonder what her late (I presume) father would make of the city nowadays. She is reminded of the tragic murder by assassination of Prime Minister Olof Palme in 1986. And then she reflects and then dwells on a road accident that she was central to in her recent past. She can’t face the talk, so she disappears into the city parks, streets, riverbanks and even the fun fair. The first half of the film is her putting her thoughts down coherently, the second half is more abstract and where she attempts to piece herself together again by just listening and looking, not thinking or remembering – just feeling the city. Letting her city where she grew up salve her wounds.

If you like this kind of film, you’ll be enraptured as it lenses Stockholm on the bleakest and most non-descript autumn days, or is it winter or early spring? The cinematographer captures the place in all its beauty – even a concrete housing complex looks pleasant, as we are asked to appraise, briefly, the architectural work of Apslund and others. Music and song are used to enrich the whole composition and its welcome, but its the script and Neneh Cherry’s debut performance that make this a must-see in my book. What could have been a disastrous film-student-style project for polar neck wearing muppets is instead a moving portrayal of sadness, inner-strength and salvation. Wonderful.

7.5 out of 10 – This isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, but if you aren’t in a rush and want to see something relaxing and quietly impressive, this might just do the trick.  A welcome change of pace if you like your art-house movies to have a heartbeat.
